HP Business customers who need to dispose of their comuputer hardware can no longer just throw the items away. The new WEEE law will come into full effect on the the 01/07/2007.
HP offer recylcing services to it's commercial customers, please read on for more information...
Recycling Services for Business Customers
HP’s Recycling Services for Business Customers are offered, in some instances, for free in the UK.
• HP collection of computer hardware from the business user.
• Delivery to a HP authorised waste plant.
• Management of the recycling process from start to finish.
• Certificate of disposal - needed for production by the business customers, also for peice of mind!
What this means to the average business within the UK is that HP will provide free service for recycling if
(a) The business delivers the hardware to a registered HP collection point.
(b) If the business can prove that it is REPLACING the equipment with more of the HP branded hardware.
Otherwise costs are incurred. The HP website was unable to list for businesses the locations of these sites or the costs. There is a form to fill in to request additional information - I will add the link at the bottom of this article.
Costs for logistics and special services (disassembly and/or controlled destruction of data) will be calculated individually, based on the current market price.

The effect of this has to end up with a higher cost of ownership for businesses. Business will need to consider the costs of disposing the hardware and the cost of changing hardware supplier.
eg. If a business has 50 PCs that are, say, HP and that business wants to change to Acer. The business will have to get a quote from HP to recycle the old stations before it can buy the Acer. HP may charge too much for the recycle process, making it more cost effective to stay with HP. How does that work? Is that fair? No one seems to be publishing their recycle prices?
Interesting times...
